I need a theme for a senior project and was doing some research on the Magnetic Levitation Train. The problems are manifold with not knowing exactly where to begin the first and foremost. My goal is to construct a working model of the Maglev train. Any suggestions?

Dear Sir: Go to Websites on Mag-Lev rail systems, of which the Japanese and Germans are probably the farthest along. Some websites have useful drawings illustrating the basics, but little more.
  I can tell you that dc induction coils spaced along both sides of the track turn on and off as the train approaches, sequentially pulling it along. These coils aren't on (energized) long enough for their heating to be a problem. It's the coils inside the train's cars that are on continuously and must be cooled by liquid helium, etc. The cars ride about 1/2" (10 mm) inch above their rail guides. Installation is expensive for those sytems because of all those big coils that must be spaced along the track a few feet apart.  Cheers, Don Casey, Dynatron Company (DynatronInvents@aol.com)

Note that for a model, you can probably get by with permanent magnets on the vehicle and treat the system like a linear, moving-magnet motor.

I made a similar project a number of years ago (with peers)only it was an electromagnetic ball levitator. We used a controllable current source with most of the force concentrated at the tip of an electromagnet. We used a PID controller and a steel ball. We were all amazed when it worked (after tweeking the PID controller). The ball floating in mid-air forever. It was a neat project. Just thought I would mention that. Good luck.
