UW-13 (d): Full Penetration or Spot
UW-13 (d): Full Penetration or Spot
(OP)
Dear Experts,
Does the joint as per UW-13(d) considered as full penetration weld?
I'm not a weld expert and have no practical weld experience.
All I know is that for it to be considered full penetration weld, the metal attached has to have a root gap which as per UW-13(d) I did see a root gap.
But I wanted to be sure that this is full penetration weld joint.
If it's not, then which diagram is considered as full penetration weld?
Regards and thank you in advance dear experts.

RE: UW-13 (d): Full Penetration or Spot
I'd offer that, root gap or no, if the joint is welded such that no unwelded material remains, it is a full penetration weld, otherwise it is not.
Examples, Fig 13.2 (a) & (b), full penetration, if no un-fused material remains between the two welds. Fig UW-13.2 (c), full penetration if the root is fused to both members, Fig UW-13.2 (d), unwelded crevice remains, not full penetration. Might be called a "through thickness" weld.
Regards,
Mike
