ABAQUS/explicit Element Deletion- Dmax Specification

ABAQUS/explicit Element Deletion- Dmax Specification

(OP)
Hello,

I am trying to drill through a layer which is 1.5 mm thick with the help of a rigid tool which has translational and rotational motion. I have used Johnson-Cook plasticity and failure damage model for the layer. The material for the layer is al-6061. The layer is constrained so that it doesn't move against the moving tool.

I have tried using different magnitudes for damage evolution which is fracture energy based but still not able to achieve element deletion at an appropriate time and as such, I tried lowering the maximum degradation criteria explicitly. Again, I tried using different values for Dmax but have been unsuccessful to delete the elements from the path of the tool.
Material Parameters:-

*Plastic, hardening=JOHNSON COOK
2.75e+08, 8.6e+07, 0.39, 1., 855., 298.
*Rate Dependent, type=JOHNSON COOK
0.05,1.
*Damage Initiation, criterion=JOHNSON COOK
0.071, 1.248, 1.142, 0.147, 0., 855., 298., 1.
*Damage Evolution, type=ENERGY, softening=EXPONENTIAL
0.,

Mesh Controls:-

*Section Controls, name=EC-1, DISTORTION CONTROL=NO, hourglass=COMBINED, MAX DEGRADATION=0.0008, weight factor=0.72
1., 1., 1.

Unit system: Pa-kg-m-K

The value of Dmax was chosen from previous result at a time where the elements are required to be deleted. Has anyone used the JC failure criteria for element deletion or modified the maximum degradation value and achieved element deletion?

Any suggestions or further questions about the process are welcome!

Thanks,
Ankit
