This is one of the wear resistant cast irons with very high chrome content, 23-28%.

It has been "suggested" that it is not ferromagnetic, or at least not enough to be successfully magnetized for Mag particle NDT.
  • Does anyone know if this is the case ?
I'm getting the feeling that at that high percentage Chrome the material is all Austenite and M7C3 ( Chrome Carbide), and since Austenite is not magnetic, "not magnetic, or magnetizable" may be right.

But the otherwise quite thorough The "Abrasion-resistant cast iron handbook" talks generally about magnetic particle inspection, but says "No specialized adaptation of these techniques is required to examine alloyed AR cast irons."

Chromium is a ferrite former versus an austenite stabilizer. These cast irons are suitable for wet MT or Liquid PT examination methods.

High Chrome iron castings are wear resistant cast irons. The microstructure constituents are primary carbides M7C3 type, secondary carbides M23C6 and martensite. There could be some retained austenite about 5-7%. Thus making this alloy magnetic and suitable for MPI.
