NX8 new user

I come from Creo, and our parent company wants us to switch to using NX8. I have been doing online tutorials, and trying to learn the drafting side of this program before we do the switch, as to limit the amount of downtime, or bottleneck in our drafting department. the modeling looks pretty straight forward.

I have been doing some very basic drawings, and tutorials, and figuring out what we need to change in our "dimension style" and views and such, but have a hard time figuring out how to change the dimensions on circles, and holes to be horizontal, not slanted. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

RE: NX8 new user

Why is your company stating of with NX 8.0? You should be using at least NX 10.0 or NX 11.0. BTW, Siemens just announced the soon to be available NX 12.0.

Just a bit of advice, due to major changes made in NX 9.0, for any new customer starting out new with NX, that would be the absolute oldest version that I allow my people to be trained on and put into production.

RE: NX8 new user

Like John, I suggest you start with a newer version of NX; but, if you are stuck with NX 8, here is how to change the text orientation to horizontal:
Switch to the drafting application and go to preferences -> annotation - then, on the dimensions tab, change the "text over dimension line" option to "horizontal".

Changing this option will affect new dimensions that you create. You can edit existing dimensions to use this option (edit -> style, change the same option).
You will want to set this option in your drawing template file and/or your customer defaults so that all new files use the desired option.

Thank you Cowski... thats what i was looking for..

the reason for NX8, is this is what the parent company uses. the parent company is a very major company, believe me, if i had my way, i would stick with creo, but sharing files between the 2 locations is very cumbersome, and not working. I have also had the discussion on why they have not upgraded, and why they are using an outdated software, that doesnt even have customer support from siemens anymore. i think they have something with Siemens, that they still get support, but no more updates.

i wish wish wish we could use at least the latest software.. sofar working with this software has shown to be cumbersome, and a huge step backwards from Creo 2.0.

Thanks for yalls help,

one more question, on radius and diameter dimensions, how do i get the dimension arrow to be pointing toward the part, instead of inside the part, out towards the leader?

i would like for my diameter dimensions to not put 2 arrows, on each side of the diameter, just on the edge, like a leader.

thanks

RE: NX8 new user

Same area and tab as cowski described - turn off 1 extension line and the corresponding arrowhead, then set the arrow orientation to manual. Click the Line/Arrow tab and set the arrowhead to out and drag your dimension outside the inner diameter.

As you're placing these dimensions, use your MB3 for quicker access to some of these settings.

I agree with cowski's closing about changing either your templates and/or customer defaults to nip this in the bud with newly created part files. For existing files, you must change these as outlined in this post, the defaults won't do it.

thanks again, i thought about turning off extension line 1, but was worried it would turn off for the regular dimensions too..

placing the dimensions.. i am left button clicking on the screen.. seems middle mouse button cancels the command. i am used to MMB click from Creo..

i have a list of things i have to change for templates for sure.. Just havent gotten that far in with my learning.

RE: NX8 new user

I could have been wrong - maybe it's right click on the dimension as you're dragging it around to place it....sorry.

And as far as changing templates or customer defaults, I wouldn't turn off arrows or extension lines - that's just something you'll have to do each time you place a diametric dimension on a hole, etc.

thanks for the information, with creo, it also places double arrow dimensions for holes, and diameter callouts.. however, there is a right click option called flip arrows, that will flip the arrows for you. is there no command for this? have to double click the dimension, and go turn off the extension and arrow manually?

Thanks again for your patience with me.

RE: NX8 new user

Once you place the dimension, yes, that's what you have to do. WHILE you're placing a newly created dimension, you should have MB2 options to change certain settings. All of this should be covered in the Help documentation....
