Understanding Code

Understanding Code

Understanding Code

(OP)
Hi all,

Looking for a little insight into understanding how to adapt language in ASCE Code to my project. In the determination of seismic base shear, I need to know the structural height of the building. I have a building on a slope with multiple levels. The front of the house is at the top of the slope and the back is at the bottom. The front and back both have 4 levels above grade. The 1st floor of the front is in line with the 2nd floor of the back.

1. Do I take the building heights at the front and back and see which is greater, or do I need to take some combination of both?
2. If there is a center retaining wall, would its weight not be included in the total building weight, since it is "below grade" from the front?

Thanks for your help!
