Cold weather engineering Alaska/Canada design

(OP)
Anybody know of good references for permafrost and cold weather design? Does Alaska have a state building code with guidance once these? does the Canadian code have guidance on this? I'll probably order a copy of both but want to ensure I'm getting something that will help me learn about the design.

RE: Cold weather engineering Alaska/Canada design

I don't think you'll get around (nor should you want to get around) working with a geotechnical engineer specializing in foundation design for permafrost.

Cold weather design alone is much simpler. Still you'll need geotechnical input to determine frost depth, adfreezing forces, soil lateral stiffness, etc.

RE: Cold weather engineering Alaska/Canada design

There are numerous publications, associations, etc. with lots of information out there. This Google search is just a start.

The USACE design guide manual TM 5-852-1 through 5 has a complete look at Arctic construction from a military (and general) standpoint.
