Geodesic aluminium dome installation

Geodesic aluminium dome installation

Geodesic aluminium dome installation

(OP)
Hi all.
A geodesic dome that has 5 rings is to be installed on a steel floating roof tank.
We have decided to install the first our rings of the dome by keeping the floating roof down. After installing the dome panels upto the fourth ring, we have planned to take the floating roof to its topmost position by filling water inside the tank. The last ring will be installed by keeping the floating roof in its topmost position. For the remaining height (upto the curb angle of the tank), the dome will be lifted using grip hoists.

1. Is the above method of dome erection allowed?
2. What are the safety precautions that have to be checked?
3. How much percentage the floating roof's buoyancy should exceed in addition to the dead weight of dome and the erection tools?

Details of tank and dome.
30m dia x 20 m ht
Dome dead weight - 10000 kg
Steel floating roof

Please share your ideas
Thanks.

RE: Geodesic aluminium dome installation

I don't think API-650 covers erection methods for aluminum domes.
If you're supporting it and floating it into place using the floating roof, the total weight shouldn't be that much, but the locations may induce a rolling moment in or out that is not considered in the design of the floating roof.
