DETAILING REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IN TENSION

DETAILING REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IN TENSION

(OP)
Hi guys,
Any tips on how to detail columns in tension? Any reference materials?

RE: DETAILING REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS IN TENSION

- Pretty sure that ACI prohibits lap splicing for this condition. Gotta go couplers etc.
- Keep an eye on the detailing at the connections to whatever you're connecting to at the member ends. Usually this makes for somewhat painful shear/punching shear considerations.
- I'd recommend running a calc on expected crack width, particularly if the columns will be exposed or in a corrosive environment.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Also, the shear capacity of tension members is reduced based on the ratio for the load to the gross area of the member. ACI 318-11 Eq 11-8.
