Sidewall Sprinkler Head with Pendant Sprinkler in Coverage Area

Sidewall Sprinkler Head with Pendant Sprinkler in Coverage Area

Sidewall Sprinkler Head with Pendant Sprinkler in Coverage Area

(OP)
Hi all,

I am trying to install a sidewall sprinkler head with a coverage area of 14' x 14'. The room has a pendant sprinkler that is less than 6' away from where the sidewall sprinkler would be located. NFPA 13 code 8.7.3.1.6 states that there cannot be adjacent or opposite sidewall heads in the same room and 8.7.3.4 states that sidewall heads cannot be less than 6 feet apart. If the other head in the room (pendant head) is within 6 feet and adjacent to the sidewall head, is this allowed? The pendant head would be approximately 3" below the ceiling and the sidewall is 6 inches below.

Reference NFPA 13 Codes:
8.7.2.2.1
8.7.2.2.2
8.7.3.4
8.7.3.1.6

Well some reason I cannot open the link.

Is the pendant directly in front of the sidewall??

I would say yes you have to follow the minimum six foot rule.

Unless one is shielded in someway

RE: Sidewall Sprinkler Head with Pendant Sprinkler in Coverage Area

First, it is customary to send a pdf or picture of the file, not an autocad drawing.

For your first problem, yes, if the spray can reach the pendent, then you must comply with the 6'-0 rule.
Second one, stagger the sidewalls. This way you can meet the 14' between.

Without seeing a drawing
I guess the other question is why do you need the two sprinklers on the same area??
It seems like one, maybe the sidewall would cover everything

RE: Sidewall Sprinkler Head with Pendant Sprinkler in Coverage Area

Doesn't look like a legal arrangement. Also it appears your pendent is 3" off the wall which the minimum is 4".

8.7.3.4 addresses sidewall sprinklers on the same wall so it doesn't apply here.

8.7.3.1.6 is correct that the pendent cannot be in the discharge of the sidewall unless the pendent is somehow obstructed from the spray of the hsw.

If your pendent is to protect under an obstruction you may consider moving your hsw to throw under it.

EDIT: you can put sidewall sprinklers on opposite or adjacent walls of a room, they simply need to be outside the maximum area of the adjacent sprinklers.

I didn't go to the pic, but if the pendent head is within three inches of the wall , can't it just be changed to a vertical sidewall head and call it good?

Deflectors shall be 4"-6" from the wall from which they are projecting 8.7.4.1.2.1*

Horizontal sidewall deflectors may be less than 4" but not vertical sidewalls. 8.7.4.1.2.2
