IBC 2009 Fire Sprinkler Exemption

IBC 2009 Fire Sprinkler Exemption

(OP)
Just a clarification.

Scenario: Generator room that with fuel 770 gal fuel in belly tank.

Per IFC 2009 section 603.3.2.1, Quantity limits. One or more fuel oil storage tanks containing Class II or III combustible liquid shall be permitted in a building. The aggregate capacity of all such tanks shall not exceed 660 gallons (2498 L).

Exception:3. The tanks shall be located in a room protected by an automatic sprinkler system complying with Section 903.3.1.1.

Per Section 903.3.3.1 there is an exemption for providing sprinkler system.
3. Generator and transformer rooms separated from the remainder of the building by walls and floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling assemblies having a fire-resistance rating of not less than 2 hours.

Question: Does the exemption for omitting sprinkler system in the generator room per section 903.3.1.1.1 still applies if the section 603.3.2.1 calls for sprinkler system?

Thanks

RE: IBC 2009 Fire Sprinkler Exemption

One, normally ahj want thier approval to use the omission.

Two,I would say sprinklers required because of 603.3.2.1, to increase the fuel amount

And normally in codes the stricter applies

Yes, provided the design complies with ALL of the requirements in Section 903.3.1.1.1. The room or space will require automatic fire detection which is required to comply with IFC Section 907.
