Weld Symbol Interpretation
Weld Symbol Interpretation
(OP)
Hello Forum.
I have an old (circa 1980) German drawing showing this weld symbol.
Drawing doesn't nominate a standard - however would almost certainly be a DIN standard.
From what I can tell - Double V butt weld, all around the periphery, has to have full NDT (x-ray, or more contemporarily, Ultra sonic testing).
What I am unsure about is the line accross the top of the V symbol, or the circle on top of the line - perhaps surface finish requirements??
Any help greatly appreciated.

RE: Weld Symbol Interpretation
I think you are about right. I think it shows a double bevel from both sides, a full penetration weld, all around. Then, the flat line on top with the half circle above means weld full, plus a reinforcement, and then grind flat. Finally, X-Ray NDT the weld. I’ve always shown the reinforcement as a flatter portion on a semi-circle over the filled vee weld. Then, I’ve noted the grind smooth, both sides, as a note in the tail of the weld symbol. You might also add a note to back-gouge to sound weld metal on the second side, then complete the weld.
