As an inspector how can I verify the panel point and flange loads of a steel bar joist, example a 12k? Sometimes the engineer states the maximum load in his notes however I have found this not to be typical. I do not want to contact each engineer on every job I visit to ask what the loads are for the bar joist therefore I would like to know if there is a way I can verify the loads without calling the engineer.

Thanks....

Call your local joist manufacturer and they can get you a rough idea of the maximum loads applied to joist chords (away from panel points).
Typically we've seen limits of 150 to 400 lbs. as a maximum non-panel point load.

If at the panel point, then the issue would be overall joist capacity if the applied concentrated load wasn't anticipated by the design engineer.
