Some clarifications on 625 weld overlay for corrosion resistance purpose based on ASME IX.

ASME IX indicates for corrosion resistance purpose, the minimum base metal qualified is 1" and above. Just wondering if the wall thickness of the actual part is less than 1" (say 9mm), can we use the existing procedure and perform an all weld metal tensile test? As long as the 625 weld metal meets the design criteria in terms of strength, we can just perform a weld build up on the actual part of 9mm thickness to make it a minimum 1" (base metal and 625 weld metal)? Or do we require a separate new qualification that meets the minimum base metal thickness of 9mm?

RE: thin wall qualification

No, per Section IX you need to qualify a new WPS for base metal thickness less than 1".

It states minimum base metal. As for the design criteria, be careful as some customers require specific joint geometry vs just an all weld metal buildup.
