View Naming Standard
View Naming Standard
(OP)
Does anyone know if there is a convention for view names and, if so, where to find it?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Also, realize that the traditional views themselves aren't (usually) labeled on a print. Were you asking about labeling the views, or just their convention for layout on a print?

8.2.2 Identifying Sections
NOTE.
In large [multi-zone/multi-sheet] drawings, themes and variations arise.
Example 1.
A NOTE/footnote can be added to the Lettered Sections/Views/Details [on the main view C/O] to indicate where to FIND the actual Section/View/Detail, such as...
A^____^A(B4)
B^____^B(Sheet 4/C3-to-D4)
C^(A5)
Example 2.
IF dozens of Sections/Views/Details [on the main view C/O] are anticipated, then this simple letter-scheme can turn into a book keeping nightmare.
One company called out all Sections/Views/Details [on a single main view C/O] with this scheme. But for added Sections/Views/Details initial Section/View/Detail there would be an added number [ascending] for each, thus...
A1^____^A1(x), A2^____^A2(y), A3^____^A3(z)... etc
A1^____^A1(x), B2^____^B2(y), B3^____^B3(z)... etc
C1^ (x), C2^ (y), C3^ (z)... etc
Etc...

RE: View Naming Standard
Yes, I understand views typically are not named as "Front", "Top", etc.
To be more specific, I'm trying to determine if the primary view should be named "-1" or "-1 SHOWN".
Thanks for your input.

RE: View Naming Standard
I generally name views when I know I will be writing documents and emails referring to them. If I write "see the FRONT view", there should be one view only on the drawing labelled "FRONT". I appreciate that when I write out my SolidWorks files to PDF, the view names are clickable. My primary requirement is uniqueness. Names like "HERMIONE" and "OGLETHORPE" would be unique, but not professional. It is nice if your view names provide some sort of intelligence, like communicating which end of your system is the front.
If you feel a need to name views, is there any reason why you should not do so?
