Single Side Welding of Web to Flange

Single Side Welding of Web to Flange

Single Side Welding of Web to Flange

(OP)
Hello Everyone,

Is there a code or design specifications stating the welding of one side of web-to-flange is sound and acceptable? in the attached document, this is not mentioned in the AISC specification, however, it is not also prevented. Therefore, it is an acceptable design practice.

Thank you.

RE: Single Side Welding of Web to Flange

The single sided weld is not specifically mentioned in the code, but it is permitted except at the ends of frame beams in high seismic regions. AISC 358 Section 6.3.1(1) specifically requires welds on both sides of the web at the ends of beams that use bolted end-plate moment connections. TLHS provided a nice summary in this thread.
