Coefficient, C for Weld Groups - Steel Manual

Coefficient, C for Weld Groups - Steel Manual

Tables 8-4 through 8-11 provide Coefficient values (C) for the instantaneous center of rotation method of weld groups.

In Table 8-4 the figure defines a special case for when the load point is not in the plane of the weld group. It says to use values for k=0. I would expect the same is true for Tables 8-5 through 8-11 but it is not indicated. Can these tables be used in such a case?

For example, a weld group as shown in Table 8-6 where the load is not in plane with the weld group, can k=0 be assumed?

RE: Coefficient, C for Weld Groups - Steel Manual

Table 8-4 special case is for shear connections such as double angle, WT, or shear end plate. The connector is assumed to deflect at the top providing ductility for shear only connections.

The rest of the tables are for in-plane loaded brackets.

So no, Table 8-6 may not be used because that would be a moment connection where the welds are in compression and tension.
