are these structures by vendor ?

are these structures by vendor ?

are these structures by vendor ?

(OP)
i'm just curious because i work in industrial industry where almost all the time I use hot rolled sections.
when i see curved, tapered or other uncommon structural shapes usually in commercial industry, are they from vendor?
or you calculate the section modulus of these shapes and design accordingly?
i'm talking about the drive thru shed

RE: are these structures by vendor ?

I would think that McDonald's would hire architects and engineers to design some of that stuff one time for the whole country (or beyond), rather than re-designing for every restaurant. If you were going to build a thousand of them, you could afford to do wind tunnel testing or finite element work that wouldn't be economical on a 1-off job.

Not a fan of McDonalds... but the structures look good...

I'd say that usually you calculate the section modulus (and other properties) of these shapes and design accordingly.

I love McDonalds other than that it tests my capacity for self restraint. Consistently first rate fries and, somehow, better Coke than Coke offers bottled. I even like their ice.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: are these structures by vendor ?

Koot, agreed on the Coke. Diet for me though...

We end up designing weird canopies and freestanding structures for our large projects. Rooftop amenity spaces, courtyards, etc. Some similar to this and sometimes awfully more complex.
You can pretty much design them with simple statics, hand calcs, and maybe a RISA model or two.

But no matter what you do, you can't make money on it! The architect will change the design 6 times and when it's finally done, all those curved steel shapes are too expensive and the owner/developer reverts to something simpler...

RE: are these structures by vendor ?

McDonalds already has a vendor selected for those, but the EOR is responsible for the foundations.

I like how they handled the base plates. Almost highway sign-ish.

Not sure if it's a good thing or not, but I've never worked with an architect ever

Lucky you. smile
