ASTM A395 class 2000 pressure-temp ratings

ASTM A395 class 2000 pressure-temp ratings

ASTM A395 class 2000 pressure-temp ratings

(OP)
ASTM A395 is not listed in ASME B16.34 but listed in ASME B31.3
B31.3 clause 323.4.2 says that the pressure-temp rating is according to ASME B16.42 which is for class 150 and 300 only but i don't have access to the actual code.
my valve is fully rated at 2000 psi which is higher than the 300 class, so i am not sure how is that going to work?

can this valve be stamped B16.34 if it meets the design/wall thickness requirements even though the material is not listed?

Okay i just did more research on this and here are findings.
any valve made from A395 materials can have a max pressure as per the following:

ASME B31.8 : 1000 psi
ASME 31.3 : 640 PSI
ASME B31.1 : 350 PSI

how is this ball valve is rated to 2000 psi?

RE: ASTM A395 class 2000 pressure-temp ratings

The valve must be designed and rated per another standard. For example, maybe it is rated per MSS SP-110. More than likely, it is a thread or weld end valve. Not flanged. Thread and weld end valves are commonly rated for higher pressures as they are not limited by the mating flange ratings.

yes it'a a threaded end. MSS-SP 110 says the basis of ratings shall be determined by the material but should not exceed the pressure-temp rating of ASME B16.34. also it mention that A395 can be used.
finally it shows in the shell test duration table that the CWP is 1000, 1500 and 2000

so if i add all the pieces together i can interpret that i can design the valve to max pressure of 2000 psi using A395 material.

does 16.34 allows the use of unlisted material under any stipulation ?

Another lesson learned to share with the community

if you are designing A395 ductile iron threaded ball valve, these are the codes it will fall under:

ASME BPVC VIII
MS-SP 110 (max pressure rating of 2000 psi)

this will not be compliant per B16.34 because the material is not listed (B16.34 only good up to SIZE 2.5" for threaded valves) also the min calculated wall thickness will be much higher compared to section VIII
