CMU Design Guide or Handbook

CMU Design Guide or Handbook

CMU Design Guide or Handbook

(OP)
Does anyone have a recommendation on whether to get The Masonry Society's Masonry Designers' Guide or Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook? I am planning to get one as a helpful resource for the SE exam. Thank you.

RE: CMU Design Guide or Handbook

I can not comment on either of those two references, but I find NCMA's free TEK Notes very helpful in masonry design. Unless you have little or no masonry design experience, I would think that the available TEK information along with the relevant masonry codes should be adequate for the masonry design portion of the exam. I would spend that money on other references (unless you are just really wanting a masonry design reference for your library).

RE: CMU Design Guide or Handbook

The reinforced masonry engineering handbook is one of the best references I have ever used for masonry design. It is a good addition to any reference library. The design guide is also a good resource, but I prefer the RMEH over the design guide due to the abundance of tables.

Thank you.

RE: CMU Design Guide or Handbook

The Masonry Designers Guide is pretty good. NCMA use to put out a binder as well. (With capacity tables and design examples.)

Be advised with any of them that sometimes they may be a code (or two) behind the latest testing standards of NCEES.

I'm a big fan of 2012 Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures (7th Edition) from The Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada.

You can find it here and it's pretty cheap: http://www.cmacn.org/bookstore-CMACN.htm

It goes through the code almost chapter by chapter laying out the design process, commenting on construction practices, and showing plenty of examples. I'm a big fan.
