Support at Panel Point

Support at Panel Point

(OP)
Can someone refresh my memory where it is stated that piping must be supported near a panel point? Is this in SJI? I couldn't locate it?

Thanks

RE: Support at Panel Point

Eatapeach:
If the various codes and stds. don’t explicitly say it, they will certainly imply that point loads should best be applied at panel points. To an engineer this should be common sense. The web diagonals pick up the point load when it is applied at the panel point and take it into (distribute it into) the truss. Whereas, when the point load is applied btwn. the panel points, it induces bending moments/shears/stresses into one member, the bot. chord member, which must be combined with the primary loads/stresses in that chord member. This later condition is usually tougher to deal with, but of course, you do have to look at the combined stresses in either case.

RE: Support at Panel Point

Typically the engineer will specify a max load when supported away from a panel point (often something like 250 lb).

RE: Support at Panel Point

Your shop drawings probably also say it
