Casting in glass balustrade support post

Casting in glass balustrade support post

Casting in glass balustrade support post

(OP)
Hi
Just wondering how people would approach calculation/verification of connection adequacy of a glass balustrade support post that will be core drilled and epoxyed into an existing slab? Cast in depth will be minimal, say 150mm.
Cheers!

RE: Casting in glass balustrade support post

Edge distance for a start, and quality of concrete. I've not seen any design charts for that type of application, but, it is common. Joint between the concrete and steel should be approx 1/8" all around and I've seen these laid out using the side of the core drill as the edge of the hole since the centre is obscured by the drill. Also make sure the hole is properly cleaned out... greatly affects the adhesion of the epoxy.

Thanks Dik.
I was also interested on thoughts on the calculation of the connection of the post to the slab due to the moment/couple forces and the verification of that given that the embedment depth will be quite small compared to the cantilever length.

RE: Casting in glass balustrade support post

Your bearing load against the concrete will be say 10 times the applied load at the top of the balustrade. Check that load wont fail the post or the concrete. As noted, edge distance is important. A post next to an edge will tear out easy, same as any other anchor.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Thanks for the calc example Ron. Exactly the type of thing I was chasing.

This is the thread for you: Link

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
