Base Stone and Finishing Stone beneath Turf Field

Base Stone and Finishing Stone beneath Turf Field

(OP)
I'm working with a client that is installing an Indoor Turf field. When we have worked with turf manufacturers previously they have provided a specification for Base Stone and Finishing Stone. This client has asked us (a Geotechnical Consultant) for a specification. Materials they have submitted are much coarser than what we have seen. Is there a guide for determining the gradation? Is there a reason a gravel is not used? Is there an ASTM standard?

RE: Base Stone and Finishing Stone beneath Turf Field

Is base stone and finishing stone not gravel? Also, what is the need to used stone. Is it a turf field that is used for sports? If so then i would think that removing topsoil, regrading formation and installing some lateral drains and then re-topsoiling would be standard.

A link below to the Football Dissociation (FA) guidelines for turf pitches in the UK. Surely this will be the gospel considering how good the Brits think they are at football (or soccer for ye yanks winky smile)

Haha. Thank you for the link. The stone is used for draining water. I'm not sure if that would even be an issue since the field is "indoor". Below is a sample gradation that has been used in previous applications:

Percent Passing
Sieve Size Base Stone Finishing Stone
1 1/2" 100
1" 85-100
3/4" 65-95
1/2" 50-80 100
3/8" 40-75 90-100
1/4" 25-65 75-100
#4 15-50 65-90
$8 0-35 35-75
#30 0-7 0-35
#60 0-4 0-15
#100 0-3 0-8
#200 0-2 0-2

Although totally different application, you can check the specifications for drainage layers for pavements.
