A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

(OP)
If I write ER70S-6 as A number 1 in WPS but haven't done chemical in PQR and don't have the same shielding gas as that of manufacturer of consumable, just referencing the AWS classification will do or not in WPS?

The following is the customer's comment
"The Er70S-6 filler metal classification permits Mn & Si content greater than QW-442, A-1, allowable. As per QW 405.5, for the ER70S-6 classification filler metal, WPS shall mention Mn<=1.6% and Si<=1% to ensure conformance of the deposited weld metal composition with the ASME Sec IX, Table QW-442 A-1 requiremtns"

Himanshu Naik

RE: A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

Hi Himanshu,

AS per QW-405.5, you can also use filler metal certificate from manufacturer to report A number.
refer below clause QW-405.5 (b)
"(b) For SMAW, GTAW, and PAW — from the chemical analysis of the weld deposit prepared according to the
filler metal specification, or from the chemical composition as reported either in the filler metal specification or the manufacturer’s or supplier’s certificate of compliance."

If your filler is meeting requirement of A number 1, then you can always specify requirements (Mn<=1.6% and Si<=1%) in WPS.

RE: A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

We are using GMAW wire and the shielding gas was different from that used by the manufacturer.

RE: A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

Yes, you can reference AWS classification for A number per QW404.5. "Designation of nominal chemical composition may also be by reference to the AWS classification except for the "G" suffix classification".

RE: A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

(OP)
So if I write A number as N/A and specify the AWS classification, that should work, right?
Please note in our case the shielding case composition is different from that used by the manufacturer.

RE: A number per QW-442 (ER70S-6)

No, do not put N/A in for the A number. Put ER70S-6. This is what you do if shielding gas is not the same....if it was the same, you could use the supplied certification and put A-1. Assuming it falls within A-1.
