Wire Mesh Load Calculation

Wire Mesh Load Calculation

Wire Mesh Load Calculation

(OP)
Welded Wire Mesh (BRC A10)to be used as safety net for sump tank to prevent fall. How can i evaluate the total load the platform (wire mesh) can resist assuming 1000 N acting vertically downward.
Attached the sketch of the wire mesh. Can i use smaller dia. wire (A5, A6).

RE: Wire Mesh Load Calculation

JMC,

First, I have found there is a little button for uploading pictures directly into your post. This helps viewers see your attachment without actually having to download it. I'm sure few take the time to download files.

I would start by assuming the strands in the mesh act as catenary wires. I wrote this several years ago when I had to do some catenary loads for ball stop netting between columns. You will have to determine how much of that 1kN gets applied to each strand though.

RE: Wire Mesh Load Calculation

JMC87:
For all the fabricating and calculating messing around of your scheme, why don’t you find a 700x700 piece of load rated grating and mount it in an angle iron frame to fit in your sump opening. The grating is supported by an angle iron frame, all around, horiz. leg under grating, vert. leg around and confining the grating. The vert. legs of this frame have some angles welded so that their horiz. legs rest on your sump opening.

RE: Wire Mesh Load Calculation

in Europe are ruling standards EN 1263-1 and EN 1263-2 : protection wire mesh against falling. Some sketches are shown for test procedure

RE: Wire Mesh Load Calculation

If you're really just worried about a low load, get a sheet of expanded metal plate. It's even cheaper than grating.
It'll cost you $30, there are load tables and it's solid.

P1ENG,
My apology. Will upload the pic directly next time.
Thanks for your calculation steps. I was expecting rather simple reference actually.

dhengr,
The platform is for temporary purpose only. The idea is to have simple construction with least cost. Anyways. thanks for your input.

robyengIT,
Noted on your reference. TQ

TLHS,
That would be better option to consider. TQ
