Hey all, my brother-in-law is helping with an extended family estate clean-up, and the above is one of the chattels; it looks like a 16 footer and appears to be in excellent shape. Reportedly someone is offering $2000 for it; reasonable?

That's on the low side if it's in good shape.

I know someone who had a cedar strip canoe restored for more than that. Lots more. You could expect to get 2x that price.

Last month I was offered an old cedar strip canoe for free. Looking at it, though, there wasn't much left to save, and an awful lot to be replaced. :(

Thanks, STF; the b-i-l is running with it now.

Such things Are hugely variable.

Is it a desirable design from a top designer?

Was it professionally built, or a DIY? If DIY, by someone with experience, or a novice?

How are the details of the build quality?

How is the outfitting?

Ultimately, it is worth what someone will pay for it.

Do you have a picture and a close up the the gunwale part, showing the ribs and the rails?

Not at the b-i-l's anymore, so can't provide pics, unfortunately. I could e-mail him, though, and ask for the pics he took...?

Bingo! Here they are:

I agree, it's gorgeous...now, to figure what to tell the b-i-l re its value.

They make nice book shelves but terrible canoes. Terrible in the sense that they don't keep the water out, too heavy to portage and too fragile for white water. They look nice though.

I have to agree with the previous post (by dgallup) regarding its characteristics as a sporting watercraft.

I too have heard of thousands ($US) paid for such, and I expect Christies (or whoever that famous auction house is) might fetch some bucks for that thing. If you haven't yet, you should do some serious web surfing of eBay and other sites to see what you come across. You could call a restaurant in Gig Harbor WA (USA) known as "The Tanglewood" and see if the owner can/will tell what he paid for the one he has hanging on display as part of the decor.

I spent a little while on Ebay. The price range seems to be from about $500 for a basket case to over $5000 for a canoe in good condition.
$2000 looks a little low but not unfair. To a friend for a quick sale and no shipping hassle, it is probably reasonable.
