steel frame design

(OP)
Im working on a small open shelter house, and racking my brain thinking (or overthinking) the bracing. I want to do W columns and beams, and then either "X" bracing on 3 sides, or some corner bracing at each bay with angles from about 1/4 of the way down from the top of the columns in each direction to the beams at a 45deg angle. I see this all the time with wood shelters/deck structures, trying to figure out why never see it much with steel structures.
The structure is 16'x24', one bay deep (16') by 2 bays wide (2 @ 12'). So each bay would have kickers left and right sides, but essentially leaving the bay open.
Any thoughts?
Should these be welded or bolted connections?

RE: steel frame design

You're basically talking about knee bracing for your lateral system right? It can certainly work but I'd be inclined to just go with bolted end plate moment frames all the way around. They're about as strong and stiff, they're cheaper to erect, and there's less to be worried about with respect to bracing etc. Really, I consider knee bracing to be a permutation of moment frame.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
