Engine Block Castings

(OP)
I was wondering if someone could tell me how the internal cavities for the water jacket are created in engine block castings. It seems to me these internal cavities would be difficult to make. Thanks.

Before pouring the liquid metal into the mold, 'cores' are placed where cavities are wanted in the final product.  For more details of the casting process and pictures of molds, cores, etc., see "Guide to Casting and Molding Processes,"

Also, when you are through with the above article, go to the Reference are on the left side of the page and click on 'Glossary.' Scroll through this, it gives illustrated descriptions of everything involved in casting. Or go there directly: http://www.castingsource.com/
