would you add bracing?

would you add bracing?

would you add bracing?

(OP)
Ive seen this yesterday and If this was mine Id replace columns (they look in a bad shape) and add some bracing between them (knee braces). I know that there is a sheating above rafters which connects roof together and provide some horizontal stability but in a case of lateral force this looks like a labile structure in my eyes. What do you think? It has been standing for many years tho so I may be wrong... the highest column is 5 m.

RE: would you add bracing?

Looks bad but it will stand. Low area, low wind pressure, plus it is semi-braced with roof rafters.

RE: would you add bracing?

I'm fine with the lateral stability provided by the sheathing. That will be stiffer than any knee bracing. And I don't think that the columns look to be in too bad of shape. They are uncomfortably slender looking though.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
