Hi I would like to know something about fixed cone valve or Howell bunger valve. I am making a thesis about that and I have to define the flow and the head as design’s parameters. I have researched and I have found that there are a lot of applications of this kind of valve. For example you could use it as a bypass or to supply minimum required water to riverbeds. I have found that in those kind of application the position is different. My question is if you could have the same valve in the same position using as a bypass and to supply the minimum required water to riverdes. Also I have found that one position could be in the drain of the dam in the lowest position and I would like to know if in that position that valve could work as a bypass or to supply minimum required water to riverbeds or maybe both. Also I would like to know how to define those parameters: the head and the flow.
I believe that it is depends of the dam but I don't know how to define that. Maybe you know something about that or you have a practical example. I mean maybe you have made a valve for some dam that it is very typical in your country and you have the parameters. I am from Peru but I have not found very specific information about that. I mean I have found some information about some hydro electrical power station but they don't say nothing about the head or the flow of Howell bunger valve and I need some numbers of parameters for typical dams and application of that valve.

I would recommend you also to study the 'sister' types of valve solution, for instance larger needle valves with positions and capacity that can be regulated. See for instance http://f2557520.td-fn.net/index.php?Needle-Valve-R....

Both for fixed cone valves and for 'needle valves' the capacity is depending on factory designed details and construction, and air inlet before discharging could will strongly influence and improve the performance. In larger dimensions capacity is often considerations made directly at the drawing board and not freely given. Please also note that pipeline and hydraulic design before and after the valve will strongly influence capacity, cavitation issues and general performance.

For some needle valves types you could typically go down one dimension from the pipeline size and have a better result and control range with correct design.

And yes: I have supplied needle valves (able to regulate) for minimum water discharge for smaller rivers. Fixed cone valves is (of coarse) more suitable for larger amounts. I would personally prefer valves able to be regulated if amounts and water level varies much over the year. Two reasons: I have seen calculations for minimum water our valves failing, and valves outlet amount regulated up. On the other hand to high water outlet is lost hydroelectric power.

Please also remember that if you have an outlet with several valves in paraallell, you will have backup available.

I have seen the website that you gave me and It was very interesting because It has information and some Drawings in
Auto Cad. Furthermore, those weeks I was making some calculations to determinate some details of the Fixed Cone Valve
in terms of design. I mean, I am trying to determinate some thicknesses and loads to design the fixed cone valve. My thesis is about an analytical and resistance calculation and I don't know if my calculations are right because there
is not a standard of calculation on internet for this particular case. I couldn't find those calculations and
standards ;however, I found out some companies that design those kind of valves but them don't give information
about specific calculations of the valve. If you have some information about that please let me know.
