HSS column to Base Plate Connection
HSS column to Base Plate Connection
(OP)
This is my first thread in this forum!
My question is about an open steel structure (see attachment). All the columns are HSS sections welded to base plates that are supporting a steel deck about 14' high with rotary machines (1800 rpm). Thus, these columns vibrate significantly and as such have developed cracks at column-base plate weld connection and column-cap plate connection, and some of these cracked even at mid-length. The ones that are cracking are interior columns and are not braced. However, there are adequate bracings put along the exterior columns in both directions.
I am thinking about stiffening the column ends with the plates using clip angles or longitudinal stiffeners so that moment due to vibration is not resisted directly by the weld. Additionally, I may recommend using vibration isolators underneath the rotary machines to dissipate some energy. Thoughts?
I appreciate your time and attention.
