Information on an old beam

(OP)
Any body has the information on following beam:

1970'S:
4 X 6 -12 lbs/ft steel beam Whats the Fy? what are each numbers represent?

Whats the todays equivalent shape and size for the above 70's beam?

Thank you

RE: Information on an old beam

do you know the cross section type w, angle, tube, etc.?

ASD 5th edition would land that as a Light Beam (W,I Shape) produced by Bethlehem Steel Co. or United States Steel Corp.
AISC has a historic data excel file which you may find useful https://www.aisc.org/publications/steel-constructi...

Based on 12lbs/ft think it may be the Light Beam equivalent modern day shape is a W6x12 (section props vary slightly from the light beam):
A = 3.53 in^2
d = 6 in
tw = 0.23 in
bf = 4 in
tf = 0.279 in
W = 12 lbs/ft
Ix = 21.7 in^4
Sx = 7.24 in^3
rx = 2.48 in
Iy = 2.89 in^4
Sy = 1.44 in^3
ry = 0.90 in

RE: Information on an old beam

Might be a 4 inch x 6 inch unequal angle.

I am sorry I should have stated it is I shape.
I don't know if it is I or W ? I don't know at that time they had W shape!

RE: Information on an old beam

They had both I & W so you need to know what it actually looks like. There was a W6x12 that was 3.55" wide and an S6x12.5 that was 3.66" wide. Properties are available from AISC.
