(OP)
what effect does the porosity of insulation materials have on their heat transfer characteristics?
Are there any new materials being developed that offer improved insulation for pipes and/or plant?

RE: insulation materials

Paisan,

The effect of porosity depends on the size of the pores, the temperature and the thermal conductivity of the material in question.

The optimum insulation material will depend on the temperature range you are interested in. If you can supply more details e.g. application temperature/conditions and the currently used material, I can probably point you in the right direction.

Ed
