Canopy Attachment at Lt Ga Walls with Brick
Canopy Attachment at Lt Ga Walls with Brick
(OP)
Hello,
Another canopy question. I have a new building where they want to use canopies with tie rods in various locations. The wall is 8" metal studs with dense glass gyp board then 2" insulation, 2" air gap then the brick. These canopies will be over large (10ft+) windows. At the top connection I plan to use a vertical channel spanning to structural elements with a plate that extends out past the brick so that the tie rod can attach to it. My question is, how is the attachment of the canopy itself handled just above the window? There is a vertical force and a horizontal force at this location. Most details I have sifted thru show the canopy being anchored directly to the brick with a bolt that extends thru the brick to a plate that is attached to the studs behind. This would imply that the brick will handle the compression load (into the building) and the vertical component which I am concerned about (not to mention that my lintel above the window now has to handle this force also). Any recommendations for how to attach this?
Thanks,
Mike

Why not try to tie to your bar joist or edge angle for the tension? For the bottom, I have seen a detail where 2"Ø pipe was extended from the studs or blocking thru the brick.
