Seismic evaluation

Seismic evaluation

(OP)
Hi, for seismic evaluation, my understanding is that ASCCE 41-13 applies for building structures. Do you use it also for civil structures (bridges, piers, etc.)?

RE: Seismic evaluation

ASCE 7-10 is for seismic design of buildings. AASHTO is used for the seismic design of bridges.

RE: Seismic evaluation

I assume evaluation of existing structures is intended?
Googling around some, I find this publication:
Seismic Retrofitting Manual for Highway Structures: Part 1 – Bridges
PUBLICATION NO. FHWA-HRT-06-032
There is at least one pdf version online, not sure if it is the latest or not.

RE: Seismic evaluation

I would think you can use ASCE 7 unless the jurisdiction requires ASCE 41 for existing structures. If you have to do a full blown analysis to ASCE 41 it is quite involved, and seismic is treated differently than ASCE 7.

ASCE 41 does not use an R factor to reduce the load. It uses increased demand capacity ratios (DCR) per specific component in the seismic force resisting system. In that case, each component has a different DCR, and they are also adjusted by other factors. It is cumbersome, and not implemented in software that I am aware of. Basically, avoid it if you can.

Thanks for your responses...I was asking the question, because I thought that ASCE 41-13 applies only for buildings...I guess that ASCE 41-13 can be used also for civil structures (at least for the foundation portion)...

RE: Seismic evaluation

The title of ASCE 41 is Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings. Civil structures are not in the scope. Maybe, some of the principles could be used for civil structures.
