fins at steel columns

fins at steel columns

(OP)
We have W-shape steel columns with heavy vertical loads on conventional spread footings. The base plate of the steel columns exceed two inches thick. So we want to add fins or stiffeners at the column base to reduce the thickness of the base plate. Do you have reference or details for how to design the fins?

Thanks.

RE: fins at steel columns

Section 3.3 (Column Bases) of Design of Welded Structures by Blodgett has a good discussion of stiffened column base plates, including several example problems. AISC Design Guide 1 gives very little, if any, treatment to that particular topic to the best of my knowledge.
