ACI-318 11 Section interpretation (SEC. 8.3.3)

ACI-318 11 Section interpretation (SEC. 8.3.3)

Hello. i am reading this section and just need clarification on section 8.3.3 part (b) that says " spans are approximately equal with the larger of 2 adjacent spans not greater than the shorter by more than 20% " . So for example having a 7 ft and 12 ft . How would I compute this? I just want to make sure. I know it's simple math but I don't remember how to do this. Thanks!

RE: ACI-318 11 Section interpretation (SEC. 8.3.3)

In the context of your example I believe that the criterion would be:

12'/7' = 1.71 > 1.20 therefore NG.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

@KootK where did you get the 1.20

RE: ACI-318 11 Section interpretation (SEC. 8.3.3)

1.2 = (100% + 20%) / 100%. Perhaps you'd prefer it this way:

(12'/7' -1) x 100 = 71% > 20% therefore NG.
