Anchor rod development length in SDC D

Anchor rod development length in SDC D

Anchor rod development length in SDC D

(OP)
Hi,

Steel columns of the braced frame building is resting on piers. Piers are designed as ordinary footings without any seismic provision applied (No ACI chapter 21). While calculating the anchor rod length in SDC D for the reinforcement development, chapter 21 need not used for tension development length calculation right? as the piers are not designed per chapter 21.

According to me chapter 21 is used for special concrete structures and does not apply to the case mentioned above.

Thanks

RE: Anchor rod development length in SDC D

ACI 318-08/11 section 21.12.1 requires compliance with Ch. 21.12 and other provisions for foundation elements, in SDC D-F. Regardless of that fact, anchor reinforcement is covered in Appendix D which has criteria for the design of anchor reinforcement, location, phi reduction factor. If you have 318-11, see figure RD.5.2.9, gives general layout of bars, you will still need to review the rest of the sections for proper design of the anchors.

My only lack of understanding is should the development length of rebar be calculated per Chapter 21 for calculating the anchor rod embedment length.
