UW-3 Weld joint category

UW-3 Weld joint category

(OP)
Dear all,
I need some clarification on UW-3 weld joint category. what type of category at the location of nezzle neck connecting with flange(W.N.R.F - weld neck raised face)

Thank you all.

RE: UW-3 Weld joint category

Nozzle to flange weld would be a cat. C regardless of flange connection type.

Thank you Mr.A.I.BP.

I have another doubt on radiography. As per ASME Section VIII Div-I UW-11 (a)(4), category B and C welds in nozzles that neither exceed NPS 10 nor 29mm wall thickness do not require any radiographic examination. Recently i reviewed one mechanical GA drawing for surge vessel. In which, 16inch nozzle connected with main shell. But fabricator state that full radiography should be given on category C welds in nozzle and if radiography is not accessible 100% UT should be given. Please clarify which statement is correct?

RE: UW-3 Weld joint category

There are quite a few variables determining how much and what level of ndt to use. I might be misunderstanding but an xray of a nozzle to shell joint (cat. D) would be not impossible but impractical and ultrasound would be more fitting due to the geometry of the joint. A weld neck flange (cat. C butt weld) would be "easier" to preform.

Sir, i need clarification on category C weld in nozzle. In my understanding the nozzle size is grater 10 inch or 29mm wall thickness, radiography is not required on category C weld in nozzle.

My understanding is correct or not. Please clarify me.

RE: UW-3 Weld joint category

vinothsvk, Category C joints may be exempted from both full and spot RT requirements if not exceeding NPS 10 or 1 1/8 inch thickness, under UW-11(a)(4) or UW-11(b).

NPS 16 exceeds (is larger than) NPS 10.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
