buckling of steel siffener

(OP)
How do you guys check a steel stiffener for buckling.
I dont really know what dimension(effective width) to take.

RE: buckling of steel siffener

it if has a certain ratio between width(b) and thickness(t) ( b/T ) then there is no risk of buckling
==> see the relevant steel code

best regards

RE: buckling of steel siffener

I use Section 15 of the AISC manual, page 15-4 in the 13th edition. I also typically check that KL/r < 25.

Where there's an accepted/tested methodology available, I think that it makes sense to reach for that first. So I vote for the AISC b/t ratio method referenced by TME.

I've used the method proposed by mats12 in the past however. I'll typically go with about 1/3 of the available width. I believe that to be fairly conservative but there's no hard science behind it.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: buckling of steel siffener

I usually use b/t and try to avoid stiffeners... lower fastener doesn't do much unless required for shear... and I don't weld in the fillet of the angle.
