Wrap decal around a cylindrical surface

Wrap decal around a cylindrical surface

RE: Wrap decal around a cylindrical surface

Already cut the part in half to prevent the decal from mirroring. This is the best I could get, as you see it's not wrapped around the surface but rather projected, even though I selected the surface as normal vector.

Hi Ritchie,
Have you tried making a New Visualization Material. On the main menu for the new Material use the Single Image in Image Mode. Under the Pattern tab use the Simple Decal and select your image here. Under the Texture Space tab use the Type Cylindrical and specify the axis direction ( of the cylinder) and origin point (pick a point on the face of the cylinder). Still under the Texture Space tab you can then use the scale options to enlarge the image and the slider bars at the bottom to move the image around on the cylinder. This works for me.

Jackie.

Hi Jackie, thanks for the tip I'm eager to follow it up. But where can I find the new Material feature? Is this still possible in NX 11 with the new Iray materials?

RE: Wrap decal around a cylindrical surface

Hi Jackie, I just discovered that the workflow you are refering to corresponds to NX 10. I'm using NX 11 with the improved rendering module using Iray materials. I can not find a similair solution, I also tried to apply the decal as a texture inside the material (similar to what you described) but that also failed because it was not possible to map just a single logo. A shame, because at least this has the cilinder mapping option.

I'm starting to believe the ability to map decals to cilinders in NX 11 is missing...

RE: Wrap decal around a cylindrical surface

I tried creating the decal "the old way" , as described by Legs11 in NX10.
Saved the part,
Opened it in NX11.
The material is still there but the decal goes missing.
The NX11 material on this part has an option to do cylindrical mapping, but the dialog is ... Let's say "not interactive"...
Origin ? XYZ ?
Normal ? XYZ ?
Up ? XYZ ?

- No, you cannot pick any of this data, you have to type...

Let's hope that this is a beta release that somehow was forgotten in the final testing...

Regards,
Tomas
