Help with selection of ASME b16.5 flange

Help with selection of ASME b16.5 flange

Help with selection of ASME b16.5 flange

(OP)
Hi,
Im an internship on this company and im helping with the design of a pressure vessel.
The working pressure is 8,1MPa, room temperature.
Based on table 2, 1.1 on ASME b16.5, class 600 would be enough (Working pressure = 10.21MPa).
My question is about safety factor. Does this standard take a safety factor already on this working pressure or i'd need to use class 900 (working pressure = 15.32MPa) to have a safety factor near 2 (probably 2 would be fine since fluid is water and mostly static state, no impacts or whatever).
Sorry if the question is kinda newbie, but im searching for that and i didnt find a simple answer. It has been only a month since i started learning about pressure vessels so my knowledge its still very limited.
Thanks in regard,
Felipe

RE: Help with selection of ASME b16.5 flange

No, no need for a safety factor. Any form of 'safety factor' is already built in, although the term itself is misleading. The way B16.5 deals with this is different.

Are you the engineer responsible for the design of this vessel? Design of pressure vessels is not something learned from an internship. It takes years under mentorship to understand the design process, and then still it's not something you can do on your own. Is there anybody in your company who has sufficient experience in PV design? If so, have him (or her) mentor you on such questions.

No, im not the responsible, but im the one gathering info about it. Its a prototype anyway.
I help with the choices but the responsible is my mentor. Im kinda aware its complicated but he has a lot of experience in engineering so i guess he is aware as well.
Thanks for your help
