ASCE 7-16 Balcony & Deck Loads

ASCE 7-16 Balcony & Deck Loads

(OP)
Can someone who has a review and comment copy of ASCE 7-16 tell me whether the requirement in Table 4-1 that decks and balconies be designed to 1.5 times the live load for the served area has been changed. The state of Washington issued an amendment to the 2015 IBC raising the live load for decks and balconies to 1.5 times the area served based on ASCE 7-10 Table 4-1. There is a movement to get this amendment reversed. I want to know what ASCE 7-16 will say but I don't have a comment copy and can't wait until July. Thanks for your assistance.

RE: ASCE 7-16 Balcony & Deck Loads

Yes, that is correct, but need not exceed 100 psf.

There are reasonable arguments to using the 1.5 factor and many of us have been using 60 psf for 40 live load for a long time. As you mentioned, a number of jurisdictions having authority switched to that loading a while ago.

One in the hand is worth two in the bush.

I still need to know what ASCE 7-16 says for deck loading. I know the ICC committee for 2018 IBC has rejected the proposal to raise deck and balcony loading to 1.5 times the load of the area serviced. They are keeping the 2018 IBC and 2018 IRC requirement at the same as the area serviced. The one piece of the puzzle I am missing is what ASCE committee did when they revised ASCE 7 in the 2016 edition.
Thanks.

RE: ASCE 7-16 Balcony & Deck Loads

Here's a paragraph from Simpson Strong-Tie's site on 7-16. Looks like 60 psf.
