PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

(OP)
Hi friends.
There has been some discussion of the possibility of using video cameras to help the coaches in practice.
The idea is that the coaches would be able to show what they mean instead of trying to explain it.
We may record practices for review.
The coach may set up some position plays and use the video of the time the kids got it right to help explain what he wants.
Some games may be recorded.
Possible camera positions;
At the blue line towards the near goal. At the goal line towards the far goal.
Remote tilt pan and zoom would be nice but out of our budget.
Manual zoom would be an asset.
Remote signal transmission to a laptop, possibly from more than one camera.
Software?
Any suggestions as to hardware, software and sources?
Any personal experiences?
Any observations?
Comments welcome.
Thanks in advance.

RE: PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

Sorry, but hockey is a hard game to video (or watch on TV for that matter) as the action is too fast to follow properly. Besides, much of the time the real excitement takes place away from where the puck is. No, you have to experience it live, to get the most out of the game.

The only way that any sort of video record of a game would be of real value to a coach would be if the video camera was suspended about 50 feet over center ice, pointing straight down, where the entire rink could be seen without having to pan the camera. That way you could see all the plays in their completeness.

RE: PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

My daughter's batting coach requests video of her hitting... it's easy for him to point out where her bad habits are, when she corrects them, etc. Of course, that's one camera in one place, but it's very helpful, particularly since he can point out the issue and she can see it herself from a third-person viewpoint.

For hockey, it may be of reduced value due to the wide-ranging action John mentions above, but I don't think it will be worthless by any means. Even iPhones record video at double rate, so you can slow down the action in replay and get a feel for what's going on. Go Pros will record at 60fps and play back at 30fps for the same effect.

RE: PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

Ah, peewee, those were the days, I remember my daughter in peewee.

One thing I saw at a few games was a gopro mounted on the glass, behind the net; it would give an overall view down the ice; one at each end would help.

Since your goal is to be able to replay and stop and explain the play and what 'should' happen, I would try one at each end, maybe one at each blueline, and see how it works out.

RE: PEEWEE Hockey and Videos.

Perhaps a multi camera video surveillance system that includes a digital video recorder would work for you. You can get these fairly cheap at Harbor Freight or EBay. The videos would be time stamped and synchronized for easy review. I don't know if the resolution would be adequate for catching fast action though.

Thanks for all the suggestions fellows.
I was thinking that one use would be at the blue line pointed towards the goal.
The coach could pick out sequences showing the players in the proper position and other clips showing players out of position.
This is not to record the game but to record examples that can be edited out to demonstrate good play and bad play.
For example:
If you are watching from a seat near the blue line, you will often see a scramble in the corner on the far side of the goal. One player is supposed to go to the net and be in position for a possible pass.
Often you see the goalie at the far corner of the net, just in front of him a defenceman and in front of him the player who has "Gone to the net". If the player gets a pass he has a defenceman and a goalie between him and the goal.
If he backed up 20 feet he would be looking at the whole open net behind the goalie.
A fixed camera would get a number of sequences in a game or a practice skirmish of both doing it right and doing it wrong.

Bill,
I think you just proved who *really* needs to be the coach on your team!

Talking to opposing team parents at games the quality of our coaches has been noted. Like;
"I sure wish we had coaches as good as your team has."
Any suggestions as to a specific camera with zoom and good depth of field? Wireless to a computer would be nice, otherwise enough memory and battery capacity for 30 or 40 minutes.

Try old smart phones.

I'm sure that the parents have plenty of disused phones. Ask the kids to bring them in (properly scrubbed of personal data)

Thanks Mint. I will look into that.
