B31,3 missing pipe spec?
B31,3 missing pipe spec?
(OP)
Good day all,
I currently have a piping specification which calls out for material of SA-358 304H Cl.1 at 850 degF. In trying to calculate the minimum thickness using B31.3, I am not finding this material in the allowable stresses section.
Checking ASME Sec. 2D, I find the material however it only gives me stress values up to 800 degF.
Is there a different section that I am missing or looking at the wrong material in the ASME codes ?

RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
Do you plan to use the material which above the Code temperature limit?

Also, you need to question if this material is suited for operation at 850 F. There may be a very a good reason why II-D limits SA358 304H Cl.1 to 800 F.
RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
What is the basis for "850 degF"?
Is it the actual maximum Operating Temperature?
or
Is it a fictitious Design Temperature defined by the Process Engineer?
Sometimes its possible to do all the right things and still get bad results
RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
Currently I am just reviewing the piping specifications which the pipe has design at 1500 psi at 850F with this material.
Based on the maximum operating temperature that the vessel usually reads is about 800F.

323.2 Temperature Limitations
The designer shall verify ...
323.2.1 Upper Temperature LIMITS Listed Materials
323.2.3 Temperature LIMITSs, Unlisted Materials.
323.2.4 Verification of Serviceability
The designer is responsible for demonstrating the validity ...........

I will see if I can get a response from the designer to understand why the material was used.
I forgot to mention that I am not the actual designer, I am engineer in the plant where the piping was already installed. I initially came upon the material as I was trying to find the minimum thickness of the pipe to compare it to thickness measurements taken on the pipe.

RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
I was actually hoping that I was missing a page in the code or just kept overlooking it!
Strangely enough this line was entirely SA-312 TP304H and then the section connected to the vessel was changed to SA-358 304H Cl.1. So there is a section of SA-358 304H Cl.1 connected to SA-312.
RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
Strangely, A358 304 is permitted under B31.3 for temperatures up to 825 C.
RE: B31,3 missing pipe spec?
It's a 24 inch pipe. Checking Section 2A, it does say that it is made from the A240 plate but section 2D would have both SA-240 and SA-358. Which then I still would not know which one is to be used.
Yes A358 304 is there, but I believe I cannot use it as a substitute for stress values for A358 304H without some kind of technical basis correct?
