Pump Station Wet Well Physical Modeling and CFD – At What Flow Capacity is it Really Necessary?

Pump Station Wet Well Physical Modeling and CFD – At What Flow Capacity is it Really Necessary?

(OP)
I am writing to request feedback on what technical criteria can/should be used to define when CFD and physical scale modeling of pump station wet wells should be performed versus when it is not necessary.

Without any problems, I have designed and built dozens of relatively small capacity pump stations (~100 GPM to 5 MGD range) where neither CFD nor physical modeling was used. I have also worked on 50-150 MGD range pump stations where CFD and scale physical modeling was used for wet well hydraulics analysis/verification. The choice to utilize CFD and physical modeling on these large pump stations seemed obvious.

What I am wondering is at what point along the continuum of pump station capacities does it make sense to insist on doing CFD and/or physical modeling versus when it makes sense to omit it?

If anyone out there would be gracious enough to point me to information, papers, etc. on the subject I would be very grateful.

Thank you.
