Connections Calculation

Connections Calculation

Connections Calculation

(OP)
Hi guys,

I have this situation where I was hired to prepare shop drawings for a steel framing..There were some connections shown on structural drawings, like moment connections, but some connections were missing..so I came up with some connections details that seemed the most reasonable for me..after the drawings' first submission, EoR had a lot of comments which were addressed and connections details seem to be approved as noted but he wants to see calculations now..And my question is if this is how it is supposed to be done..? When I am FoR I calculate the whole structure and I show all the details, including connections (which I think are the most important elements in any steel structures..) If any connections are missing, contractor's detailer asks for those details and I provide them..EoR should claim the responsibility for his design...I don't mind preparing calculations for him but he should give me forces in nodes right? What would be your approach here? I will appreciate any advice.

RE: Connections Calculation

In some states, even though connections are delegated design, the EOR is still liable.

I do not know all of the details, I am sure there are some grey areas. I am also sure others will be able to provide a more thorough answer.

RE: Connections Calculation

It depends on the contract documents. AISC 303, Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges, has three options for connections. See section 3.1.1. If the fabricator designs the connections, the EOR needs to provide the loads. If the fabricator is not responsible for the connection design or selection, the EOR should provide the missing connection information/details.
