ABAQUS CONSTRAINTS

ABAQUS CONSTRAINTS

ABAQUS CONSTRAINTS

(OP)
Hey Guys,

I have an ABAQUS Model, where I want to constrain 2 parts together (a thin metal plate and a U shaped piece of metal). Before I can do that, I have to bend the metal plate, so it fits into the U-shaped part. During this deformation the 2 parts should not be constrained together. After the Deformation, Part 1 fits into Part 2 and now they should be constrained together where they touch. The constraint should be like a hinge, where U1,U2,U3,UR1,UR3 are fixed together and UR2 is not.
The intuitive way for me would be to make a coupling constraint between the two parts and switch it off in the first step, but it seems like ABAQUS is not able to do that.
So what I tried, is to analyze the deformation of the one part seperatly and then import the deformed part, but this part has many Sets and surfaces, which are not imported (I would need to redefine around 500 sets and surfaces each time i try a new configuration of the 2 parts).
Sooo I found a post in this forum, where it is mentioned, that my problem can be solved using *Contact Pair, *Surface Interaction and *Model Change:

*CONTACT PAIR, INTERACTION=INTTIED, ADJUST, TIED
SURF1 , SURF2
*SURFACE INTERACTION , NAME=INTTIED
**
**.. rest of model input

Does anybody know, how I make an Interaction between two shell edges, where the UR2 DOF is not included?

Thanks for your time in advance!

RE: ABAQUS CONSTRAINTS

i think if you use mesh parts you can import the deformed mesh with sets/surfaces intact.

Hi Dave,

can you tell me how? I am doing it in the Abaqus CAE (not with input file), and it will always give me the warning that sets and surfaces are not imported. And indeed they are always gone after importing.

RE: ABAQUS CONSTRAINTS

Just checked this morning - imported deformed parts from multiple .odbs into CAE. Obviously, the parts are imported as orphan meshes but all sets/surfaces were intact. This is all clearly described in the Abaqus/CAE User's Guide - Section 10.7.14 - Importing a part from an output database.

Basically in CAE just select:

File -> Import -> Part -> Set File Filter to Output Database
