Problem on SHelf capacity

Problem on SHelf capacity

(OP)
Hello, I am new to this forum. I am an intern at a fab company and currently I am away from school. I was given an assignment to find the shelving capacities of a cantilever steel frame. I have problems on how forces are calculated mainly on the column and bases. Can anyone help me with this. Picture attached. . Your help will be appreciated. Thank You.

I’ve got a few thoughts and questions to get you started. Why aren’t the vert. members 80" high (you show 72" on your sketch) so that all of the shelves have 14" vert. clr? And, maybe the verts. should extend down to the floor, with items #3 butting into their front flg. Why are items #3 so much larger than items #1? Why are cross members #4 & #5 different sizes? The W8x28 and the W14x30 are only 2lbs./ft. different, but the shop has to pull two different WF’s out of stock to cut these, and that handling will cost a lot more than the material difference is worth. Will these shelves be loaded with a forklift? What about stability of the entire frame, and the various members? Who helped you put this arrangement together, have you talked this over with your boss? What Uni. are you going to and what year are you? Draw the shear and moment diags. for the 4x4 HSS canti. shelf members for several different likely load conditions. What are the max. shears and moments that the HSS can take? What grade of mat’ls., and is this the best size HSS? Then work back to the actual loads for each condition. What do the fixed end welds look like to meet these max. shears and moments? Draw the axial load, shear and moment diags. for the verts., item #1, a beam/column, which member size controls the design so far? Then, size items #3 to match items #1, and to make items #1 work. What does this connection detail and the welds look like?

Hi dhengr, Thank You for your reply. I am going to MSU, Mankato. I will be a junior next time I go back to college. This frame was already built in the company. I was told to find their shelving capacities. I will get back to this post when I have done my part. and again, Thank You.
