HSS Slip Connection

HSS Slip Connection

HSS Slip Connection

(OP)
Anyone have a good detail for a HSS square tube to W Beam? I was thinking two knife plates and bolted with vertical elongated holes. less than 2K lateral load.
Thanks

RE: HSS Slip Connection

What size beam and post? How much slip do yu need?

RE: HSS Slip Connection

Is the HSS a beam and the W-section a girder? Tops at same elevation? What has led to the need for vertical slip?

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: HSS Slip Connection

Sounds to me like the HSS is a wind post, supported laterally at the top by a rafter. If so, the slotted connection is common and appropriate. Leave the bolts slightly loose and weld the nuts.

Yes, HSS wind column and a W beam. No more than 3/4" deflection in the beam. Post CL and Beam CL will be in same plane.

RE: HSS Slip Connection

When space permits, we've gone so far as to provide a 4 sided pocket and omitted the bolt.

RE: HSS Slip Connection

Can you use a through bolt at the HSS with clip angles/BAR stock welded to the overhead W Beam. The clip angles/BAR have the vertically slotted holes. Can provide shims to facilitate 'fit up'.

RE: HSS Slip Connection

(OP)
@ Dik, seems very similar to what I am proposing with just a single plate at the top and bolted.

RE: HSS Slip Connection

OP: it's a good detail... I've used it lots of times with HSS and W sections. With W sections, single clip/BAR to web and no shims required. With HSS, double clip/BAR and shims. Through bolt can be threaded rod, fasteners to be finger tight and threads peened.
